The case for an iPhone nano?

Like many people within the last decade, my first apple product was an iPod. Specifically, an iPod 3G with the annoyingly sensitive touch buttons and menacing red glowing buttons. As the iPod line continues to wind down having saturated the MP3 player / PMP market with options and the competition in the cheaper segments now being eaten up by more sophisticated copycats, I'm left wondering where can Apple go when it comes to future updates to the iPod line?

It's not a stretch to imagine the following continuation of the iPod line; the iPod classic is eventually going to be put to pasture or kept along without any real updates,the iPod touch will continue being a stripped down iPhone offering the iOS platform as a viable gaming alternative in thinner and cheaper format, and the Shuffle to continue being a bare-bones clip for workouts and minimal playback. Judging by the extreme generational differences between the generations of the nano, from its tumultuous changes from a long form factor (1G, 2G, 4G, 5G) to the fat one (3G), from incorporating a camera (5G) to the current square touch-screen (6G), it looks like the iPod nano is the remaining segment where Apple is going to continue to evolve.
