Where can I get map software (Australia) for a Magellan handheld GPS?
[2007-02-21 02:46:45]

Q: My husband has a Magellan handheld GPS. He is having trouble getting suitable map software for motorbike riding in the Victorian State Forrest. He needs to have bush tracks, creeks, rivers and location of mountains etc. Any ideas of where to look would be great.
We don't mind buying it.

A: I take it you don't want to buy the software? The 'Discover Aus Streets and Tracks" is very good, but unfortunately only a few cents short of $400.

What Garmin/Magellan GPS handheld is the best?
[2007-04-10 10:26:55]
Magellan

Do I HAVE to buy a map? And also, are they worldwide usable?

I prefer Garmin over Magellan (but this is like the old which is better? Chevy or Ford? debate)

I use the Garmin iQue 3600(from eBay) the map CD comes with it but you need to buy a SD card to put the maps on--I recommend a 2 GB SD card (that way you have room for music and mp3 songs).

My maps are for the US. You can buy maps for Europe. Not sure about other continents. I would encourage you check out Garmin and Magellan websites to look at their maps.

O/T - GPS for my boat/hunting

A question for the Great Guru's of this board. Was wondering if any of you could give an opinion on handheld GPS units. I mainly want it for my center console boat when going out in the bay, or the occasional trip through one of the passes into the Gulf of Mexico (Florida Panhandle, fairly large bodies of water). Probably wouldn't need it when I hunt, but it would be handy anyway, just in case. I've researched some, and for a low cost starter the Garmin Etrex seems to be what I may need to go from point A to point "?" and back again. I think I don't really need all the bells and whistles of a high tech unit. Something to set waypoints with and run a backtrack feature, cause I may do some night fishing as well as during the day. The option's of the fish/hunting calender with tides and moon phases would be cool also. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Navigation systems:

GPS (global positioning system) devices have been around for a while, but they keep getting cheaper and more accurate. Among the most popular brands are Garmin, Magellan and TomTom. Handheld GPS devices now start around $100, although souped-up systems that can give live traffic updates or play music from an MP3 player cost closer to $700.

Basic GPS devices provide driving directions and can point you toward services like gas stations or hospitals. Mid-range devices have additional features such as spoken street names or a lane assistant that tells you which lane to get in on the freeway.

which is better a garmin handheld or a magellan handheld?
[2008-02-26 08:59:47]

I am looking into buying a relatively cheap handheld gps for geocaching, boating, hiking, and hunting. If i get a magellan it will either be the explorist 210 or the 500le if i go with garmin it will be the etrex legend, or the etrex legend hcx. What do you guys think?

Garmin for sure. I have an etrex legend myself and love it.

I have had a couple friends who owned magellan's and the cases broke. Although they were still on warranty, magellan would not honour it.
