WATERLOO — A tiny spy camera, a folding camera, an Instamatic camera that’s shaped like a beer can: the history of photography is told through the surprising and impressive collection of cameras that’s tucked away in a room at Wilfrid Laurier University.

The 500 or more cameras — big, small, odd-looking and familiar — were gathered by two intrepid photographers, Wilhelm Nassau and John Durst.

Nassau is an Austrian-born professional photographer who was the founder of WLU’s audiovisual department in 1969. His vast experience includes doing photography on location in Vienna for the 1949 British film noir classic, The Third Man , which starred Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. He photographed the Queen at her Jubilee in London and was at the state funeral of assassinated U.S. president John F. Kennedy, where John Jr. saluted his father’s coffin.

Durst, manager of WLU’s media technology resources, has worked with Nassau for 35 years and has travelled the world with him. Together, they’ve produced documentaries on everything from dinosaur fossils to glass-making and making port wine in Portugal.
