Computer Monitors?

Q: I have a computer that is about 4 years old (yes i need to buy a new one). I am an avid video gamer, but not on my PC, but on my Xbox 360. I was wondering if there are companies that make a high quality computer monitor that doubles as a Small HDTV. (Preferrably under 1000 dead presidents)

A: If you want a computer monitor that can double as a small HDTV, then you want to look for an LCD panel that has HDMI inputs.

Newegg has a KDS 26" LCD with HDMI at $419: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824155056

Dell is selling a Samsung 26" with HDMI for $685: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A1500995

Both do 1920x1200 resolution for your computer. Personally I'd go with the Samsung.

26" monitors seem to be your best bet.. I'd love to recommend a 30" for you, but those cost way over 1000 dead presidents (especially for the ones with HDMI) so that's probably out of the question. :-P

What causes computer monitors to burn out quickly?

Wonderful World Of S90 0147

After a couple days of having the monitor plugged in it goes out. The computer also crashes ever once in awhile. It feels like the power supply is real hot. Could this be the source of the problem or is there something else that could be the problem. Monitor went out, bought replacement and the it went out after a few days. Don't want to buy another one til I know that I've fixed the problem that causes the monitors to go out.

it could be faulty wireing, but unlike tvs, most people not even knowing it leave moniters on allllllllllllllllll day and all night....ifs its in screen saver, its not off

Dell Updates OptiPlex Business Line InformationWeek
In addition, Dell on Thursday upgraded the OptiPlex 360 with the 380, which comprises three models, a mini-tower, a desktop, and a mini-desktop. The latter was not available in the 360 line.

In introducing smaller desktops, Dell is targeting space-constrained organizations, such as those found in education and healthcare settings. Cash-strapped schools are packing more students in classrooms, so less room is available for computers, and hospitals are placing PCs on medical carts or under desks, so smaller is a necessity.

Such "purpose-built" computer designs have become a focus of Dell, Curtis Campbell, OptiPlex product manager, told InformationWeek . In addition, customers in general are demanding systems that reduce overall costs through power efficiency and system management tools.

"Those are critical things that customers are looking for," Campbell said.

The smallest OptiPlex 780 is 9.4 x 2.6 x 9.3 inches, weighs seven pounds, and is Dell's smallest OptiPlex product.

How do multiple computer monitors work with only one computer?
[2009-01-12 06:36:46]
Wonderful World Of S90 0072

I was watching The Dark Knight yesterday and another show and never understood how they can get all those screens to work on one computer?
Sometimes the screens all show the same thing and sometimes they each have their own webpage!
What features does your computer need to allow multiple monitors to work like that?
Thank You

It's all accomplished using a video card that has multiple heads. If you're using a computer that has a dedicated video card, as in not integrated into the motherboard, most likely you can do this too. Just about any new video card you buy today can support this feature. Simply connect two monitors to your video card, run through a couple steps in your operating system, and you're up and going. Originally when Windows98 first supported this setup, you had to have multiple video cards to have multiple monitors. Through settings within your operating system, you can either mirror the monitors and show the same image on each, or extend your desktop on to the second monitor, at which point you can have different images on each. If your computer has integrated video, you may be able to install a new video card and be on your way, depending on the expansion capabilities of your machine.

How much energy are my coworkers waisting leaving their computer monitors on overnight?
[2008-05-05 05:23:34]
Wonderful World Of S90 0124

My lazy coworkers turn off their computers but not their computer monitors at night and over the weekend. It is incredibly lazy and bad for the environment! How much energy (and dollars) are they waisting? Assume they should have it on 9-5, Monday to Friday! You can work it our per person - 17 inch screen!

Thanks.

It depends.

On the power switch, is the symbol a vertical line completely enclosed by a circle? Or is it a vertical line running through the top of a circle?

I suspect it is the latter, in which case the standby power is typically the same as the 'off' power, so they are wasting just as much electricity as you are. If the system is off then the monitor will go into a standby power saving mode.

If it is the former symbol then I would suspect that it would be a watt or maybe two.

168 hours a week, less a 40 hour work week gives 128 hours. Times 2 watts gives 256 watt hours per week. About 1 kWH, or 1 unit per month.

If the hear is on, then the office will save 1 kWH of heating costs. If the AC is on, then it will probably cost another 1.5 - 2 kWH to remove that heat.

So about $1.50 per person per year.
