Natick's Open Door gets cookin' with new stove

Folks who regularly attend The Open Door feel the highlight of the free community dinner held in St. Paul’s social hall on East Central Street are the generous helpings of community spirit included with all the other good food served up by volunteers.

Others say Open Door is the very heart of the Natick community itself.

No one takes either opinion very seriously – they’ve too busy enjoying a varied menu of pizza, meatloaf, and “Beans Buckingham” named for the late and much loved Harriet Buckingham, who prepared her signature dish of franks, beans and pineapple chunks for almost two decades of Thursday night suppers.

What with all that good food and before dinner singing, along with a chance for people to catch up, all sorts of friendships have blossomed from the occasion. Folks come from every place in town come to Open Door, some for a chance to socialize and others because cooking is a chore that’s getting hard to do. Young people come too. For those that can’t drive, a public-spirited bus company provides free transportation from Cedar Gardens.
