Gas detector saves lives of two in OC

OCEAN CITY -- Two people would be dead if not for the carbon monoxide detector in their home that was given to them free of charge by the Ocean City Fire Department.

At about 1:40 p.m. on April 1, OCFD responded to the 200 block of North Division Street at Bridgeview Apartments for a reported carbon monoxide detector activation.

Two occupants of a unit told firefighters their detector had been activated, and air monitoring equipment eventually revealed elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the apartment that resulted from a malfunctioning gas stove.

Using the Masimo Rad-57, a portable device that allows paramedics to perform an on-the-spot test for carbon monoxide levels in a person's bloodstream, it was discovered the two residents each had levels of 80 parts per million, a level which could be fatal if sustained.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's current permissible exposure for carbon monoxide is 50 ppm during an eight-hour period.
